Inheritance and Will Support

Fees for inheritance and will preparation

Understand the work and fees before you engage us

The work involved, and the way fees are calculated, differ between inheritance procedures after a death and preparing a will during your lifetime. Choose the fee information that matches the support you need.

Choose the fees you would like to check

Inheritance procedure fees

From JPY 132,000 (tax included)

The basic conditions are an estate valued at less than JPY 5 million, up to two heirs, up to two properties to be listed in the agreement or related documents, and a combined total of up to two items involving deposits, securities, insurance, vehicles or similar assets. Check the detailed fee page for additions when these limits are exceeded, separately requested work and expenses.

Support includes identifying heirs from family registers (koseki), preparing a family relationship chart for inheritance, and preparing an estate division agreement based on terms the heirs have already agreed. Bank and vehicle procedures require a separate check of the work to be requested.

The basic heir allowance is two people. From the third heir, the additional fee is JPY 33,000 per person, tax included. The allowance for properties listed in documents does not mean that representation for inheritance registration of real estate is included.

Will preparation fees

From JPY 99,000 (tax included)

This is the basic fee category for a handwritten will involving assets valued at less than JPY 50 million. Please check the detailed page for fees and expenses relating to a notarized will, witnesses, support with an application to deposit a handwritten will for safekeeping, and execution of a will.

The basic support covers organizing your wishes and preparing draft wording for a handwritten will. We will provide an estimate for the scope you request, including any support for a notarized will, witnesses or a safekeeping application.

Free initial 30-minute consultation

Your initial consultation is free for up to 30 minutes.

We listen to your circumstances and concerns, then explain whether we can assist, the next steps, the procedures that may be needed, and an overview of the fees. You do not need to know the name of the procedure or have every document ready.

Document preparation, research, applications, notifications and other work are charged separately. You are under no obligation to engage us after the consultation.

Costs are explained by the work you request

  • Basic professional fee: the fee for research, document preparation and other work included in the basic service. Check the asset value, the number of people or items covered, and the included work.
  • Additions to the basic fee: fees for heirs or asset items beyond the basic conditions, additional family register research, and other applicable work.
  • Separately requested services: fees for procedures outside the basic service, such as closing accounts at financial institutions.
  • Expenses: costs needed to carry out the work, such as certificate issuance fees and postage.
  • Other professionals’ fees: costs of engaging a judicial scrivener (shiho-shoshi), tax accountant (zeirishi), attorney (bengoshi) or another professional. These are considered separately from our fees.

You may also request support with a specific part of the work, such as collecting family registers or preparing an agreement. Tell us what you will handle yourself and which documents you already have. We will estimate the requested work separately from the basic service.

The cost depends on the circumstances

The work varies with the number of heirs, registered domiciles and connections between family registers, the types of assets, and the requirements of banks or other receiving institutions. Where family relationships are complex or there is an overseas element, we will first identify what needs to be checked.

Consider both the amount and the scope: what is included, what additional work may be necessary, and when a further fee would arise.

Expenses separate from our professional fees

In addition to gyoseishoshi (Certified Administrative Procedures Legal Specialist) professional fees, the following expenses may apply. We will identify the relevant items and the amounts that can be confirmed when preparing the estimate.

  • Document issuance fees: fees for family registers, removed family registers, residence records, certificates of registered matters, property valuation certificates and other necessary documents.
  • Postage and travel: costs of sending documents, travelling or visiting a distant location.
  • Fees charged by the receiving authority: costs such as preparing a notarized will or applying to deposit a handwritten will for safekeeping.

If you engage a judicial scrivener, tax accountant or attorney, that professional’s fees are separate. Representation for real estate inheritance registration, inheritance tax returns and case-specific tax advice, and negotiations or disputes between heirs are not included in our gyoseishoshi fees. Confirm the responsible professional and the costs before deciding what to request.

From an estimate to starting work

  1. Understand your situation: we ask about your family, assets, existing documents and wishes.
  2. Define the scope: we separate what you will handle, what we can support, and what needs to be checked with another professional.
  3. Provide an estimate: we explain the basic fee, additions or separate services, and the main expenses.
  4. Agree the engagement and begin: we proceed after you have agreed to the terms. If further work becomes necessary, we explain the work and fees and obtain your confirmation before starting it.

How the process works

Questions about fees

Should I look at inheritance fees or will preparation fees?

For procedures after a family member has died, see inheritance procedure fees (in Japanese). To prepare your own will, see will preparation fees (in Japanese). If you are considering asking for execution of a will, check the section on execution on the will fees page. You can also ask which information applies and what work may be requested.

When can I confirm the actual fees?

We review your existing documents and the work needed, then explain the scope and costs before you engage us. We also identify applicable additions, separate services and the main expenses.

Does the displayed fee cover every procedure?

Work outside the basic service, document acquisition expenses or another professional’s fees may be necessary. Please check the scope and separate expenses on each detailed fee page.

Can I request only part of the work?

Yes. You may request specific support, such as family register collection or document preparation. We will check your existing documents and what you will handle yourself, then estimate the scope you request.

Could there be additional costs after I engage you?

Previously unknown family relationships or assets may come to light and require further work. We will explain the work and fees and obtain your confirmation before proceeding.

What should I prepare before a consultation?

You do not need every document in advance. If available, have family registers, the will, bank passbooks, property documents or an asset list ready. Tell us if any documents are unavailable.
